IELTS Writing Task 2: Essay Structure Guide

Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1, so it deserves more of your time and attention. Here's a proven structure for a Band 7+ essay.

Time Allocation

You have 40 minutes for Task 2. Use them wisely:

  • Planning: 5 minutes
  • Writing: 30 minutes
  • Checking: 5 minutes

The 4-Paragraph Structure

Paragraph 1: Introduction (2-3 sentences)

  1. Paraphrase the question topic.
  2. State your position or outline what you'll discuss.

Example: "In recent years, the debate around remote work has intensified. While some argue it reduces productivity, I believe the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks."

Paragraph 2: Body 1 (5-6 sentences)

  1. Topic sentence — your main point.
  2. Explanation — why this point matters.
  3. Example — a specific case or evidence.

Paragraph 3: Body 2 (5-6 sentences)

Same structure as Body 1, with your second main argument.

Paragraph 4: Conclusion (2-3 sentences)

  1. Summarize your main points.
  2. Restate your opinion (if it's an opinion essay).

Essay Types

Opinion (Agree/Disagree)

  • Pick one side clearly — don't sit on the fence.
  • Give two strong reasons for your position.

Discussion (Discuss Both Views)

  • Body 1: One view + reasons
  • Body 2: Other view + reasons
  • Conclusion: State which you agree with more

Problem/Solution

  • Body 1: Causes of the problem
  • Body 2: Possible solutions

Key Tips for Band 7+

  1. Use linking words naturally — "Furthermore", "However", "As a result"
  2. Vary your sentence structure — Mix simple, compound, and complex sentences.
  3. Be specific — Vague statements score lower than concrete examples.
  4. Stay on topic — Answer the exact question asked.
  5. Write at least 250 words — Aim for 270-300 for safety.

Common Mistakes

  • Memorizing template essays (examiners can tell)
  • Using informal language ("gonna", "stuff", "a lot")
  • Not paragraphing properly
  • Going off-topic in body paragraphs

Practice writing one essay per day, get feedback, and you'll see rapid improvement.
